“We learned that four middle school girls in our program joined the gang ‘Vatos Locos.’ We immediately met with all of them and their parents. All were advised of the implications and troubles of gang membership. It was a very involving and stressful time since we consistently checked in with the girls to make sure they made well informed decisions. Then, the families chose appropriate courses of action – two of the girls moved out of the city, one returned to her country for a few months, and one participated in counseling and volunteering with the Police Gang Unit. The following school year three of the girls returned to our program, and are now attending college.”
